The Pinellas County, Florida, Clerk of the Circuit Court’s Legal Self Help Center has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Louis M. Brown Award for Legal Access by the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services.

The Award is presented by the Delivery Committee each year to a program that provides affordable access to justice in innovative ways.

The Self Help Center is an exemplary model of affordable legal services programming, operating through a unique partnership between the court and private bar and offering attorney consultations for a small fee.

The Legal Self Help Center has assisted over 6,000 individuals since they opened the doors to the first two locations in October 2007 and the third in March 2010.

Two additional nominees were selected to receive meritorious recognition:

  • The Arizona Foundation for Legal Services & Education and the State Bar of Arizona received meritorious recognition for the Modest Means Project, a project consisting of a legal helpline and reduced-fee lawyer referral service that has increased access to justice for those of modest means throughout Arizona.

  • Mauk & O’Connor, LLP received meritorious recognition for its emphasis on providing affordable legal representation, through a fee-shifting model, of families involved in special education disputes with Illinois schools.

Established in 1994, the Louis M. Brown Award, which is awarded annually, honors programs and projects that creatively contribute to the delivery of legal services, information and representation to individuals of middle class and moderate incomes with unmet legal needs.

The awards will be presented during the ABA Midyear Meeting in Atlanta, on February 11, 2011.
